Autobiography of George Takei
this took far too long to read. I got it to have him sign for Emerald City Comicon- which I didn't. I seem to always decide against standing in a line for two hours. It's nice to wave from a distance.
anyway.
this was an interesting read, it wasn't like i thought it would be, mostly in that he doesn't talk about him and his husband at all. he did mention kissing his best friend who was a girl. I was rather disappointed. then again this was published in 94, and I have no idea if they were even together. They are just so adorable I wanted to know more.
his family life wasn't the only reason I wanted to read his book, as I posted before I- have read Nimoy's recent autobiography as well. I wanted to compare and see what someone else thought of the back scene's of the sets. they were very mush alike. it was nice to see two different sides of Shatner though.
I can respect Mr. Shatner in his willingness to make money and be professional only. what I dont like is that he refuses to have anything to do with whatever is paying him once he is off the set. You don't have to go to conventions, it's so very clear you don't want to be there, and charging $75 for you to ignore us is rude. I would like to think the treker fanbase is much more understandable than getting mad that you turned us down because you really just don't want to be there. I know I was upset when I heard Ton Felton couldn't come but understood too that he has other things he is working on and left it at that.
oh well.
from how George talked about Nichelle I must read her book if she has one- by far I think she is the most beautiful of all the star trek cast members. (don't worry I still love Jeffery Hunter and Bruce Greenwood like only I can see to muster)
it was also interesting to read the rather detailed and large political career George has had, makes me wish he lived near my area to help with our problems.
and his childhood. I personally feel ashamed that the United States thought it prevalent to start concentration camps on our own soil. yes I realize they were nothing like what history has shown us- hell Alexander the Great was the first person to establish them and some of them are still great cities today (most of them with the name Alexander somewhere in it....) and I realize I am going off of one man's experiences and know nothing about the actual tactical and political reasons for them, bit it's just sad that humanity in general feels a need to act that way.
on a brighter note- the best parts were when heresy and rumors were flying around about the movies or the series, and the truth behind them. Like Nimoy's hate of Spock. George explained it so well; when an actor is being taken over by a character, it's terrifying both mentally and for a career.
all in all- for a look at the backstage and life of the original series (Sir Patrick Stewart makes an appearance too) I recommend his book greatly

ALSO according to his facebook George is really considering making another book about his facebook encounters.

honestly, I've read five other books between this one... but they were all for school and I had to write papers and talk about all of them, so I refuse to make a journal on them here. If you want to ask anything about them feel free to message or post.
